Mar 01, 2010 Copper prices surged overnight after a massive earthquake struck Chile, the world's largest producer of the metal, over the weekend.
BHP Billiton’s wholly owned Cerro Colorado copper mine lies within the Atacama Desert at an altitude of 2,600m east of Iquique, Chile. The mine is a significant producer of copper cathode for BHP, although production levels have declined in recent years as grades have declined. An earthquake in 2005 also caused significant production shortfalls.
Feb 28, 2010 The main port which has been shut down by the earthquake is in Valpara so just west of Santiago. The Codelco copper mine impacted is 50kms north of Santiago in Andina, and produces an estimated 600K tons per year. Codelco’s other mines in northern Chile.
Apr 22, 2021 In 2020, Coldelco was the largest copper producer in Chile, with an output of over 1.6 million metric tons, or approximately 28 percent of the national copper production.
Sep 14, 2018 The law change was aimed at raising revenues to help the country rebuild after a devastating earthquake in February 2010. Chile is the world’s biggest copper.
May 27, 2021 Copper prices advanced on Thursday, on supply threats in top producer Chile, while slower pace of earnings in top consumer China's industrial firms eased concerns of policy tightening.

Jun 22, 2020 The remaining reserves of copper ore in Chile were reported by the Central Bank for the period 1985–1997 and by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from 1998 onwards (USGS 2017). Remaining reserves are those available after discounting yearly refined production. Three scenarios were considered for future copper reserves in Chile.

Apr 04, 2018 Copper Mining and Macroeconomic Indicators Copper mining has accounted for an average of 10 of Chile’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the last two decades. In comparison, the mining industry as a whole represents 10.9 of GDP. Between 1996 and 2016, copper mining as a percentage of economic activity in Chile ranged between 3.6 (in 1998).
The first major discovery of copper in Australia was at Kapunda in South Australia in 1842 when Francis Dutton found copper ore whilst searching for lost sheep. By the 1860s, South Australia was known as the 'Copper Kingdom' because it had some of the largest copper mines in the world.
Copper and its alloys are also widely used in plumbing components, building construction as well as industrial machinery and equipment. An average car contains than 20 kg of copper and suburban homes have around 200 kg of copper. The main ore mineral of copper in Australia (and worldwide) is chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2).
Oct 27, 2020 Ships began carrying copper ores to Swansea from the other side of the world from Cuba, from South Australia, and from Chile. For the next three decades or so, Swansea Copper was at its fullest extent. Thousands of tons of copper from around the world were bought and sold at its fortnightly ore sales.
Apr 19, 2015 Northern Chile has some of the largest copper ( gold iron) deposits in the world. These copper deposits formed from a combination of factors, but are generally associated with intrusive-extrusive magmatism and tectonic activity on the western boundary of the South American plate (Davidson, 1987 Camus, 1990 Sillitoe and Perell , 2005).
Sep 29, 2004 The plant has a service weight of 1,360t and a capacity of 8,500t h (gyratory 60-113). As with all plants previously supplied to Chile, potential earthquake and seismic conditions were of major consideration. In 2003 another contract for a large crushing plant with a jaw crusher for an iron ore mine was awarded from Brazil.
Apr 17, 2020 “Mined and refined copper guidance is lowered due to a potential reduction in second half output at Escondida from Covid-19 measures and the earthquake repairs at Kennecott,” the company said. Rio Tinto has a 30 stake in Escondida in Chile, which produced 1.19 million tonnes of copper last year, equivalent to around 5 of global supply.

AVERAGE COPPER MINING GRADES CHILE VS WORLD 2005-2016 • Average Ore grades of the sulfide line have decreased similarly (27 ), Chile and the World. • Ore grades of the oxides line in Chile are lower than the world average. • There is a depletion of oxidized resources in Chile, which will mean 66 lower production of SX-EW cathodes by 2027.
Copper is usually found in nature in association with sulfur. Pure copper metal is generally produced from a multistage process, beginning with the mining and concentrating of low-grade ores containing copper sulfide minerals, and followed by smelting and electrolytic refining to produce a pure copper.
Chile and the USA are, respectively, the world's two leading copper-producing nations, Chile having overtaken the USA in the early 1990s. Extraction Ores are first mechanically crushed and ground so that nearly all copper mineral particles are freed from the gangue.
